quick takes

i am going to link up again.
enjoy!

1.  teaching a baby brother how to suck in a spaghetti noodle.

i just can't imagine how wonderful it would be to have older siblings.
i have heard that one of the best gifts you can give a child is a sibling.
i couldn't agree more.

2.  i might make too many lists...

caden asked one night if i would put on my list:
remind caden to cut his nails

and bronson left this on the refrigerator for me one morning-

-all because of #3.

3.  this week i finally did one of the most horrible mom things.
i was late to pick bronson and connor up from school.
like 10 minutes late.
and get this - it is because i got busy reading a prayer book!

4.  every couple of years i clean junk out of my house.
it has started again.
i took a big garbage bag into my closet and this is all that is left.

now that feels better.
i can breathe in there again.
next i am going to attack that closet under the stairs.

5.  i now have 2 real gray hairs.
they are wild and beautiful.
i love gray hair.  i've waited a long time for their arrival.

6.  i bleached our towels this week and that is a very happy thing to me.

i know bleach is horrible for us and the environment.
but i just can't stop.
besides, it always reminds me of going to confession and my soul getting all white and pure again.

7.  my most beautiful moment this week:
bo christian has a cold.
that is not beautiful.  it is a nasty mucous mess.
but, he let me rock him to sleep.
he has not let me do that since he was just a few months old.
our house was dark while it was raining and sleeting outside.
just the old fashioned radio was on.
it was so peaceful.
his beautiful baby body was limp in my arms.
i am so thankful i have the time to do that.

have a great weekend!

an excellent read

one of my very most favorite blogs is
she's one of the most inspiring mothers i've come across.

go here to read a letter she wrote today.

if only this was the most difficult thing my boy will ever face in his life:

popcorn

from the looks of this blog lately, all we do around here is eat...

we have not had a microwave for like 5 years.
ours broke and it never seemed worth the money to get another one.
the only time i have missed it is when i'm hungry for popcorn.
so, my awesome husband has figured out how to make popcorn on the stove.

my baby really doesn't have devil eyes - he has the most beautiful blue eyes.

when husband gets in the kitchen after dinner and gets his pot out,
bo christian comes running and saying 'pop pop'.

a serious popcorn conversation.
husband can make salty (my favorite), a sweet kind,
and this past week he made caramel corn for the first time.
now that stuff is good!

shoveling it in...
not long ago connor told us his teacher made popcorn at school using a food heater.
he was very surprised a food heater (microwave) could do that.
when i was a kid and my parents were remodeling the kitchen,
my sister and i were amazed that mom could make popcorn on the stove.
now, doesn't all that seem backwards???

quick takes

this is quick takes valentine's style.
if you clicked over from conversion diary,

you are correct to assume that i am technologically challenged.

1.  yesterday bo christian sat in my lap and let me rock him.
twice.
it was his valentine's gift to me.

eating a valentine cookie.
2.  the last cake baking adventure you will hear about:
so, i made a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting to celebrate the day.
after looking at red velvet recipes, i decided that duncan hines would be the best choice.
wrong.  mr. hines let me down big time.
the cake was very moist, but tasteless.
i did make the cream cheese icing.  it was fit for a king!
except for the fact that there was little pieces of paper in the icing.
i think it must have been part of the butter wrapper, maybe??
i had a helper who put the butter in the mixer.
so anyways, i am officially done with cakes.
i've given them lots of chances and they just do me wrong every time.

3.  don't worry, we were not without dessert.
my mother saved us - she sent us sugar cookies.
thank you , nana.
a thank you picture just for you:

yes, i made them all wear red to school.
4.  connor took his own money to school and bought me flowers.
here he is showing me how to pose with them:

he told me that they will never even die!

my pose:

wonder if when husband married me he realized what a beautiful cross-eyed beauty i would turn into...
5.  these are the sweetest pictures.
my big boys just got off of their bus and bo christian is running to them.

they both take time to greet him!

i'm sure he's telling them all about that cookie in his hand.

6.  since all of these pictures were taken within a 5 minute time span,
i don't have a single picture of my favorite valentine.
husband was still at work.

7.  one not valentine related:
connor made his first confession last week.
of all my boys, i would have liked to be a fly on the wall to hear his confession.

see him way up there with our favorite priest.

a king cake recipe

today is fat tuesday.
that means one thing in our house:
king cake!

i can't remember the story behind the king cake.
but, there is a story to it...
the only part i remember is whoever finds the "baby jesus",
has to provide the cake next year.
and that part doesn't even matter to us because i make the cake each year.

anyways, here you go:

for the cake-
2 (8oz) crescent rolls
8oz cream cheese
6 tbsp (or more) confectioners sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 tbsp melted butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 tbsp cinnamon

for the icing -
1 cup confectioners sugar
1-2 tbsp milk
food coloring

preheat your oven to 350'.
spray nonstick cooking spray on a baking sheet.

separate crescent rolls at perforations.
place them on your baking sheet like this:

about halfway down from the points,
you need to press the seams together.

next, beat the cream cheese, confectioners sugar and vanilla.
when it gets yummy and creamy,
spread it on the dough in the center where you pressed the seams together.
be sure to "hide" your baby jesus in there too.

yes, we use a lego guy as baby jesus.
and i had an extra crescent roll left over.
obviously i am not an expert at this.

get out another bowl to mix the butter, brown sugar and cinnamon.
sprinkle that crumbly mess over the cream cheese.

now fold the triangles up over the filling forming a circular shape.
it will look something like this:

there is my taster who calls himself a helper.

bake it for about 20 - 25 minutes or until golden brown.
let it cool.

now you've got to put the icing on.
combine all the confectioners sugar and milk in a bowl until smooth.
(i always use more sugar and milk)
divide the icing into 3 bowls.
make one green, one yellow and a purple one.
drizzle the icing over the cake.

........................................................

i tried to post this earlier, but i had this thing called life going on.
if you remember next year, here is the recipe for you.
however, my main goal was accomplished.
i've got this documented for us.
